What are bumper plates?

Bumper plates are weight plates are coated with high-density rubber and these lifting plates are specifically designed for Olympic lifting and Crossfit. These plates are designed to be safely dropped from overhead without damaging the floor or equipment.

What are bumper plates used for?

These weight plates are ideal for Olympic lifts like cleans, snatches, and deadlifts, as well as any advanced functional training. You can also use bumper plates for plate-only exercises like goblet squats, plate lunges, plate front raises, plate chest press or for CrossFit-style workouts.

Are bumper weight plates are the same with rubber plates?

No, they are not the same. Bumper weight plates are high-durability plates specially designed for overhead drops and powerlifting. While rubber plates or rubber coated cast iron plates are much more thinner plates that is for controlled lifts, but not intented for high-impact drops as this can cause cracks or peeling of the rubber.

Can you drop bumper plates safely?

Bumper plates are specifically designed to absorb impact and it has high density rubber coating making them safe to drop on floor mats or fitness platforms.

Are Olympic Bumper plates better than cast iron plates?

It depends on your training. Olympic bumper plates are better for impact-heavy lifts and ensure your gym floor is protected, while cast iron plates are better for controlled lifting and traditional strength training setups. Cast iron plates are not designed for overhead drops.

What exercises can you do with bumper plates?

Bumper plates are the ultimate all-rounder weight plates for anyone ready to put in the hard graft. From slamming through explosive Olympic movements like snatches, power cleans, and clean & jerks to staying locked-in for heavy strength sets like deadlifts, squats, and benching, these plates are built to handle it all.

Do bumper weight plates bounce?

Yes, but Northern bumper plates have low, controlled bounce ensuring safety and no rebounds during overhead drops.

Can you do a bench press with bumper plates?

Yes. Bumper plates work just like any other weight plates when bench pressing. You can load in the barbell in the same way. But due to its thickness, it limits the weight that you can load on the bar, so if you want to do bench pressing with heavier loads it is ideal to use cast iron plates.

How do I store bumper plates?

A plate toaster rack is ideal for quick access when you’re swapping weights during a heavy session, while a vertical weight rack is the ultimate space-saver for anyone building their dream gym in a tighter spot.

Can beginners use bumper plates?

Absolutely, bumper plates are a brilliant choice for beginners. The main advantage is that even the lighter plates, like the 5kg plates, are the same size as the heavier 20kg weight plates. Since they have that high-durable rubber coating, you can drop them without worries, protecting both your floor and the equipment. You can also use bumper plates for plate-only workouts.
